Midnights – Taylor Swift

At the 2022 VMAs, Taylor Swift announced that her 10th studio album would be released in October 2022. Titled Midnights, she describes this album as “the story of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout her life.” Midnights dives deep into complex topics such as anxiety, insecurity, self-criticism, insomnia, and self-confidence. Building off the synth-pop sound of her previous projects, The Midnights vinyl experiments with dream-pop/bedroom-pop styles. However, this time the album points toward Taylor’s past life. Midnights is a concept album about her “after-hour agonies”, and also serves as a lyrical motif that has been included in past works. The album marks Taylor’s 5th album release in three years. After a dispute over the sales of her past projects, Taylor has taken the time to re-record Fearless and Red.

As Taylor has been a big easter egg person in the past, and she surely lived up to that with Midnights. From the span of September 21st-October 7th, Taylor released a video series on Tik Tok that announced the tracklist of Midnights in a randomized order. The videos were set up like a lottery; spinning a wheel of numbers that corresponds to each track. In a randomized order for each video, the tracklist was eventually figured out by Swift fans.
